Maastricht can rightfully claim to be one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. At the end of 2008, a treasure consisting of coins was dug up near Maastricht which had been buried over 2000 years ago by subjects of Ambiorix. Around 50 BC, this leader of the Eburons had a pouch with 39 gold and 70 silver coins hidden in a pit to protect it from the advancing conqueror Julius Caesar.
