Magical Maastricht

Winter in Maastricht is a great time to enjoy the many facets of the city. From Friday 3 December 2010 to Sunday 2 January 2011 (incl.), the entire city will give itself over to enjoying the holiday season. Beautifully lit streets will link the various squares, where Christmas cheer and ice skating fun reign supreme against the convivial background and atmosphere of special Christmas markets and café terraces. This year, Maastricht will again reveal itself as a unique and enchanting Christmas destination for young and old alike.

Magical Maastricht is also unique because of the wide-ranging and colourful palette of cultural events on offer, including beautiful Christmas concerts, theatrical events, and special exhibitions in the various Maastricht museums.

Discover Maastricht’s many shining stars

This year for the first time, the entire city centre will be spectacularly transformed into a winter wonderland of Christmas cheer and winter fun – from the Central Station through the Wyck district, Kesselskade and the Jekerkwartier district to the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein, Markt, and Vrijthof squares. Be captivated by the playful lights on the Christmas decorations and Christmas trees in the streets of Maastricht, taste traditionally made regional products in the Jekerkwartier district, let your spirit be moved by the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein square and its glorious basilica, and take pleasure in the sight of children playing in the “Kids’ Christmas Paradise” on the Kesselskade (where their parents can also enjoy a breathtaking view over the Meuse river). Once again, the Vrijthof square will be home to a thrilling 1,000 m2 skating rink and a Christmas market where you will find one-of-a-kind gifts. Of course there will be plenty of oliebollen (traditional deep-fried doughnuts), warm waffles, and mulled wine.

Father Christmas may even stop by!

Culinary delights

Let your taste buds be tingled by the many culinary stars to be found in Maastricht. Any number of restaurants offering various cuisines and in special settings promise an exceptional seasonal dining experience. In addition, you can take a culinary walk and explore Maastricht’s many gastronomic secrets, from unusual delicatessens to delicious regional products and treats.

However your tastes run, it’s sure to be an experience to stimulate your senses!

Shopping & gifts

It’s the dream of many women to be able to shop to their heart’s content until late in the evening – to go searching for that perfect Christmas gift, and of course, a dazzling outfit for the festivities. Maastricht is doing justice to its title of the country’s best shopping city and will be opening its doors until eight in the evening during the four X-Maastricht Shopping Nights on Saturday 27 November, Saturday 4 December, Saturday 11 December, and Saturday 18 December 2010. The city centre will transform into a fantastically fun shopping centre in the Christmas theme, with lights, Christmas decorations, and all sorts of festive activities. All over the city, choirs will be singing carols at the top of their voices, and orchestral societies will be letting their instruments ring with holiday sounds. Of course there are plenty of pleasant cafés and restaurants where you will be able to relax and warm your hands with a delicious glass of hot mulled wine or a mug of hot chocolate.

A cultural winter

Culture aficionados will find plenty to interest them this winter in Maastricht. Enjoy an artistic Christmas in Maastricht during the KerstKunstTours (Christmas Art Tours) in the Bonnefantenmuseum and special exhibitions in numerous other Maastricht museums, such as Centre Céramique. Be sure to catch the “winter’s tales” and the variety of Christmas theatrical productions, including Mr & Mrs Murphy – If anything can go wrong, it will, playing (in Dutch) at the Theater aan het Vrijthof. There are also countless opportunities to hear the sounds of Christmas during the many concerts given by ensembles such as the Limburg Symphony Orchestra, Mastreechter Staar, and the Amati Ensemble. The Christmas festival held at the Maastricht Drama Academy will give you a taste of tomorrow’s theatre greats.

Christmas spirit and winter fun

Magical Maastricht: too much to take in on a single day. Not to mention all the activities in the surrounding area, such as guaranteed fun in the snow at SnowWorld Landgraaf, ultimate relaxation in the waters of Thermae 2000, a romantic journey with the ZLSM Christmas Express and the enticing Christmas markets in Valkenburg and Aachen. It’s definitely worth your while to stay the night – or even several nights!
